Article About Kuina's Past

(References used: Wikipedia.org)

Daughter of Koushirou, the Swordmaster of a dojo in Shimoshiki village, Kuina was trained in the art of swordsmanship since a very tender age and was a great swordmaster, despite being a female. One day, a small boy named Roronoa Zoro, with no experience nor ability in swordfighting at all, challenged her dojo stating that if he won, he'd take the dojo's sign, but if he lost, he'd join it and train there. Being weak and unexperienced, Zoro lost to Kuina in a single blow, and felt hummiliated.

After joining the dojo as promised, he trained harder than anyone in order to beat Kuina. In no time, Zoro could beat anyone in the dojo, except for Kuina herself. The two would fight from time to time, but Zoro would always lose. After 2001 fights, he still couldn't beat her no matter what.

Despite have beaten him for so many times, Kuina lost her hopes for her future as a swordfighter after being told by her father that, being a female, she's soon grow to become weaker than men, and for that she, as a woman, could never fulfill her dream of becoming the greatest swordsman in the world. Zoro got angry when she told him that, crying, after winning their 2001st fight, stating that she was strong and that training so hard just to beat someone that would eventually get weaker than him was stupid and made him look bad. He then swore that when he finally beat her, it would be because he trained hard and became stronger than her, and not because she grew up and became weaker.

Zoro's promise and spirit made Kuina regain her hope, and after that they made a promise that, one day, one of them would become the world's greatest swordmaster, although Kuina still teased Zoro about being too weak to even think about being the best.

Sadly, the day after their promise, Kuina fell down stairs when trying to get a sharpening block and died. In the english version by 4Kids, she was injured by the friends of a man she defeated, and could never fight again. She was then only 14 years old. After that, in the anime, Kuina's father tells Zoro that she had being training more than ever due to their rivalty and that he regreted telling her she couldn't be the best, for she could have become a great swordswoman if she hadn't died.

After that, Zoro asks her father's permission to have the honor of taking her sword, the Wadou Ichimonji, in order to carry on their promise and become the greatest swordsman in the world, for Kuina could no longer achieve the position.

Kuina would now be 21 years old if she was alive in the present days. Her last appearance in the anime was on a filler arc called "Ocean's Dream" (episodes 220~226), in which the memories of all Strawhats are stollen by a seahorse-like creature, except for Robin's. When they finally retrieve their memories, the most important people on each Strawhat's past appear in front of them all as a illusion, smiling to them. Kuina was between those people. She also appeared as a playable character in the english exclusive Playstation 2 and Game Cube game "One Piece Grand Adventure", released in the USA in August 29, 2006, and in the Europe about two months later.
